I went to Everise the other day and had a shocked that the canned cuttlefish price has increased a lot since a year ago. I remember that a year ago the price was between RM5 to RM6 per can. Now the price is at RM10.60 per can. The thing that baffles me is that it is clearly written on the can "Buatan Malaysia". How come a locally canned food price can increased so much? Normally an increased in price is associated with the increased in petrol price. So for every can we are charged RM4.60 (assuming the price is at RM6 a year ago) worth of petrol to deliver it to the customer??? Is there any logic to this????????? Maybe someone out there can enlighten me a on this matter....
This blog is about the struggles of the local natives of Sarawak. I will highlight the plight, the hardship and the needs of the natives of Sarawak in this blog. Occasionally I will air voices of concern regarding issues which matters to us daily. I have also written about my life journey and the hardship I endured, the pain, the headache that I had to go through to be where I am today.

The Semester Break
28th April 1991...the most memorable date in my life. That was the date I met (then), my future husband. We were introduce by a mutual friend. This friend till today, still couldn't believe it that we actually end up married. It was the best semester break I ever had. By the time I had to return to KL to continue my degree, I was so heartbroken as I won't be able to see him till the following year. The long distance relationship did worry me at first but we kept intouch thru letters. Trouble was brewing ahead of us though...he didn't have a college degree and I knew then, that my family would not approve of him. We continue to see each other during my semester break and that was the happiest time of my life. I knew that I wanted to be married to him at all cost. That was the start of an even bigger problem......

Unhygienic Food Preparation
I eat out most of the time. Be it breakfast or lunch, i patronize the cafes along my way to the office or anyway near the office. There are a few stalls that serve delicious meal...that I like to eat. The problem with these stall is that the cook smoke while they are preparing the dish which turns off my appetite automatically. Don't they know that it is unhygienic to smoke when they are preparing the dish? Why won't they learned and why won't anyone tell them off? I just did that today and by look on that cook's face, today would probably be my last meal there. He look pissed but I know I did the right thing. So all of you out there who encounter the same problem please be brave to voice it out. There are so many illness, diseases these days that we don't need unhygienic cooks to make it worst!
What is there for us on 31st August 1957?
This article is taken from http://beingvernon.blogspot.com
It is time to stop buying into a lie.
Dear Reader,
May I be honest?
I am sad. I am sad because I am told by my government that I must celebrate the Independence Day of my country on the 31st of August. But what is so wrong about this that it makes me sad?
Let me tell you. If you don’t like dry and boring history lessons, you can leave my blog now. But if you have ten minutes to spare, read on.
The Federated States of Malaya which comprised all the nine Sultanates, Malacca and Penang were given their independence by Great Britain on the 31st of August, 1957. The photo below records the historic event. It is the iconic image of Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaiming independence for Malaya. Yes, MALAYA. Not Sarawak, not Sabah, but MALAYA. And this date became known as MERDEKA DAY. For the Federated States of MALAYA.
Then, six years later, Sarawak was given her independence. On the 22nd of July, 1963. Bet you didn’t know that the 22nd of July is an historic date for Sarawak, huh? Of course you wouldn’t. It has probably been wiped off the official history text books, or glossed over during history classes. But if you buy a copy of the Sarawak Government Almanac, it’s there in black and white. The British gave up Sarawak on the 22nd of July, 1963 and on that day we became an independent nation. A country all of our own. Our own flag, our own anthem and even our own money!
Then, twenty five days later, after the British granted her independence, Sarawak, together with Sabah, Singapore, and the Federated States of Malaya came together to form a new nation called MALAYSIA on the 16th of September. This date, the 16th of September, 1963, came to be known as MALAYSIA DAY because it was on this historic day that a brand new country was born in the world. (Singapore got ‘kicked out’ later but Malaysian history books politely claim she decided to withdraw from the new nation. Brunei was also involved in the discussions to form Malaysia but it too decided against the idea.)
However, gradually, Malaysia Day became forgotten through, I suspect, a subtle and systematic process of brainwashing on the part of the Barisan Nasional government. More and more emphasis was placed on Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day was ignored, its significance eroded and displaced by Merdeka Day. Merdeka Day became a public holiday, and the whole country began to get caught up in celebrations come every 31st August.
Young Sarawakian school children were, and still are taught to wave flags and jump for joy come 31st August because on this date Malaysia achieved her independence. Now if you have been paying attention, you will obviously have noticed that there is a factual error in the previous sentence. Malaysia DID NOT achieve her independence on the 31st of August, 1957 simply because Malaysia had not existed yet! It was only Malaya which achieved her independence on the 31st of August, 1957; Malaysia was only formed six years AFTER Malaya achieved independence.
The date 31st of August means nothing to me as a Sarawakian and yet I am told by my government to honour this date on the basis that I am a citizen of Malaysia and therefore as a proud and loyal Malaysian, I should jump and shout for joy that Malayans received their independence on the 31st of August despite the fact that I am also a Sarawakian and this date has absolutely no value to me. This date did not affect my beloved Sarawak in any way whatsoever and has never been part of its rich history, so what is there to celebrate or what memory is there to honour and cherish? Sarawak achieved her independence on the 22nd of July but the government does not give this date any due recognition. Instead, I am to celebrate a date which has more significance for my fellow Malaysians in West Malaysia. That is why I am sad.
Malaysia Day, the 16th of September, 1963, however, means a lot to me. It was the date my beloved Sarawak became a part of a new nation, standing tall and proud in the world amongst other independent nations. Shouldn’t this date when we officially became a country take centre-stage in our history as a nation?
And yet, it was only last year that the Barisan Nasional government decided to recognise Malaysia Day and grant it ‘public holiday’ status. And only because Pakatan Rakyat ‘reminded’ the BN government. It actually took the BN government forty-seven years to recognise Malaysia Day officially!
But the question on my mind is why did the BN government try to sweep Malaysia Day under the carpet and dispatch it to the annals of history to be conveniently forgotten? And why do I suspect that there is a conspiracy going on to distort and blur the story of the formation of Malaysia?
Let me draw your attention to the opening paragraph of a blog entry dated 15th September, 2009, by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Razak. He wrote,
“On this day (16 September) forty-six years ago, Malaysia welcomed Sabah and Sarawak as states and set out on a course toward becoming one of the leading nations in the world. I was only 10 years old when my father, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, witnessed the historic proclamation of Sabah’s independence in 1963, but I remember how proud he was during that momentous occasion. Sabah and Sarawak occupy a special place in my heart because of that history.”
Spot the offending sentence? “Malaysia welcomed Sabah and Sarawak as states.” The Prime Minister of Malaysia, no less, officially writes in his official blog that Sabah and Sarawak were welcomed INTO a country called Malaysia in 1963!
Not only is this sentence factually wrong (as Malaysia was actually formed on that very day and you cannot ‘welcome’ other states into an entity which would need those very states to form it in the first place in order to welcome anything into), but it is also a blatant re-writing of history! Sabah and Sarawak were not just states of a larger country, Mr. Prime Minister; Sabah and Sarawak were INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES and EQUAL PARTNERS to Malaya!
But if you were to believe the Prime Minister writing in his blog, Sabah and Sarawak were only states that joined an already existing country! Surely the Prime Minister of Malaysia would know history and know how his own country was formed? And if he genuinely made a mistake, surely one of his many advisers and staff members would quickly alert him to the fact and correct the glaring mistake? Or did they not know too, and if so, it begs a more disturbing question: is our country being runned by incompetent people who do not know the history of their own country? Truth be told, I suspect no one made a mistake.
It is plain that history is deliberately being re-written. But why? Two glorious words: Malaysia Agreement.
The Barisan Nasional government wants us to forget that there is such a thing as the Malaysia Agreement. It wants us to forget because the Malaysia Agreement specifies very clearly that Sabah and Sarawak have certain rights and privileges enshrined in the 18-Point (Sarawak) and 20-Point (Sabah) Agreements respectively. Sabah and Sarawak, both independent countries, came together as equal partners with Malaya to form Malaysia with pre-conditions attached. And these pre-conditions would empower Sabah and Sarawak. Empowerment is a frightening thing to the BN. It does not like to empower anyone except itself. Now more so than ever, it needs Sabah and Sarawak to retain its majority in Parliament and cling on to power. So to give power to Sabah and Sarawak is a very frightening idea to the BN government. So what does it do? It re-writes history and hopes that Sabahans and Sarawakians forget. It teaches Sabahan and Sarawakian school children to celebrate the 31st of August as Malaysia’s Independence Day whilst remaining deafeningly mute on the 16th of September. It uses newspapers, television and colourful parades to brainwash the masses into believing the lie that it assiduously propagates - that Malaysia gained independence on the 31st of August, 1957; when in actual fact Malaysia had not yet existed.
But all is not lost. You and I can change the situation. We can bring honour back to the 16th of September and accord it the significance it rightly deserves. More importantly, you and I can honour the Malaysia Agreement and return power to Sabah and Sarawak. Did you know that the Pakatan Rakyat has made a very important pledge to the peoples of Sabah and Sarawak?
Respecting the position of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners in the Malaysian Federation, and honouring previous agreements made, Pakatan Rakyat pledges to restore autonomy to Sabah and Sarawak in line with and within the framework of the Federal Constitution and the Federation Agreement.
Yes. A Pakatan Rakyat government will honour the Malaysia Agreement. (The Federation Agreement is basically the Malaysia Agreement.) This pledge is contained in the Buku Jingga, the book of policy pledges by the Pakatan Rakyat. You can download the Buku Jingga in English HERE. If you, like me, love Sarawak and want to see her powers and status as an equal partner restored, you will know what to do come the 13th General Election.
Back to the Prime Minister’s blog entry, which you can read HERE. If you continue reading the blog entry, you will see that the whole purpose of the entry was to appease Sabahans and Sarawakians. Wasn’t it ironic that in trying to appease us, he actually made us feel even more displeased, thinking us illiterate idiots with short memories?
So when is our nation Malaysia’s Independence Day? There simply isn’t one. Our nation Malaysia never achieved independence. Our nation Malaysia was born out of the coming together of three individual nations already independent BEFORE they formed Malaysia.
And let us be clear once and for all. Sarawak never JOINED Malaysia because there was no Malaysia to join in the first place. Sarawak joined Malaya and Sabah to FORM Malaysia. Never forget that. Teach it to your children.
I will fly my Jalur Gemilang proudly on the 16th of September. Not on the 31st of August. It is time to stop buying into a lie.
P.S. If the Barisan Nasional is genuinely not guilty of subtle and systematic brainwashing and never willfully schemed to displace Malaysia Day with Merdeka Day (and my entire argument about the insidious plot to wipe the Malaysia Agreement from memory is therefore in tatters), then the Barisan Nasional is guilty of a far graver and greater sin - absolute and unadulterated ARROGANCE; the significance of Malaya’s independence far outweighs that of Malaysia’s formation and birth and to hell with what Sabah or Sarawak might think. And that means we’re well and truly screwed.

I totally agree with the article by Mr. Vernon Kedit. Infact a lot of Sarawakians realizes this a few years back and that is why we stop putting up flags on our vehicles or at our house for merdeka day. 31st August 1957 is meaningless to Sarawakian!!
Gambling unlawful even during funeral wakes
Gambling unlawful even during funeral wakes — Police chief
Posted on August 9, 2011, Tuesday Borneo Post
KAPIT: Kapit police chief DSP Entusa Iman has advised members of the public here not to indulge in gambling activities as it is against the law.
“Gambling is not our ‘adat’. Don’t take advantage of funerals to organise gambling sessions. Gambling is unlawful,” he warned.
Acting on a public tip-off, a CID team last Saturday conducted a raid on an illegal cockfighting session at Merating, Sut along Baleh river about an hour’s drive away from here.
“The police managed to apprehend five men and recovered four dead and four live fighting cocks. The men are now under remand pending further investigation. The police will also call up a few more persons believed to be involved,” said Entusa.
He warned that only those with valid licences and gathering permits were allowed to conduct cockfighting, and reminded them that stiff penalties await those who breach the law.
“Without the licence and permit, it’s illegal to organise cockfighting. Persons involved can be charged under Section 5(3)(D) — Cruelty to Animals (cockfighting) rule.
“Any one found in procession of ‘taji’ or cockfighting knife could be charged under the explosives and offensive weapons act.
“If convicted, the sentence is a jail term or a fine of not more than RM5,000.
æIf in procession of ‘taji’, he could be charged under the Corrosive and Explosive Substance and Offensive Weapons Act,” he explained.
Entusa also took the opportunity to advise families not to allow any form of gambling activities to be carried out during their period of mourning.
“It’s rampant here in Kapit that the family of the deceased while preparing for the funeral allows gambling sessions in their premises.
“Warning is hereby given before hand and police will not hesitate to take action against any offender,” he warned

I truly agree on this matter. During a funeral, we are supposed to pay our respect to the dead person. So by gambling during a funeral you are not respecting the dead. Gambling of any sorts are a disgrace especially to the dead person's family. So I hope in the future, anyone see someone trying to start a gambling event during a funeral please stop them. It is a despicable act of disgrace to our community and to the dead person's family.
Life In the University Part 1
It was a date i will always remember for the rest of my life...15th June 1989, the date of the offer letter from University Malaya for the Science Matriculation program. For the first time in my life, I had to fly on my own to Subang Airport by end of June 1989. My arrival was met by my brother who was working in KL. The next day I was dropped off at the entrance of University Malaya 2nd college for our one week orientation program. We weren't allowed to have visitors or calls during the one week orientation. I felt like an alien until I met my former Form 5 classmates Zeti and Nora who happens to be offered the Science Matriculation program as well. Boy, I sure felt relieved at that point.
The seniors woke us up rudely at 4am for our early jog around the football field for almost every morning. Then we are ask to clean up and get ready for our enrollment for the Science Matriculation program. For the whole one week, sports activities as well as other activities were line up for us to do and it was damn tiring. At night we still have to listen to the talk given by the seniors on the life in campus, the dos and don'ts. I practically fell asleep during the talks only to be shouted at by the seniors for not listening. We had to compete in games such as sepaktakraw, volleyball, etc with the other matriculation student from other college during the orientation week. If I don't recall wrongly, 2nd college won the sepaktakraw event and I have to admit that sepaktakraw is a very interesting game to play and I like it. We almost lost our voice for cheering the boys during the game. On the last day of orientation week, me and my friends decided to walk around campus but we had to pass thru the boys hostel and my first encounter with Kelantanese boys was not pleasant. They tried to get our attention and when we didn't pay attention to them, they call us "HUDUHHHH", Kelantanese slang for UGLY!
After the orientation program was over, we were sent to different college for our actual hostel for the next two years. Me and my friends were sent to 3rd college and we had to commute quite a distance of about one kilometre daily to our lecture hall.
Every morning after breakfast you will see throngs of kids commuting to their lecture hall. The tutorial class were smaller and I met a few Sabahan students as well.
The first year of my studies I was ask to joint the Sarawakian Students Association and my first assignment was to dance a cultural dance of the Orang Ulu tribe. We had to practice almost every day for our performance infront of the Prime Minister for the Rukun Tertangga event.
I was relieved after the performance was over and I was surprised by Dr Mahathir's remark that among the dancers, he knew that I did not belong to the Orang Ulu tribe. Well he was very observant
For the following year it was routine for me. My friend Yod got a motorbike from his father to ease our running to and from our lecture hall and she wanted me to be the pillion rider. So for the 2nd matriculation year I was gratefull for that kapchai motorbike. The day Yod received the motorbike, we ride through the highway and were wondering why our motorbike was the only motorbike on the highway whereas all other motorbike was on another lane. We realised that we were on the wrong lane when some cars were honking at us. Lucky there was no traffic policemen at sight. We also almost had an accident at the PJ traffic light because we were chatting while riding and didn't realise that it had turn red and we just drove thru it much to the shock of other drivers with some honking at us.
Towards the end of our matriculation program our class decided to have a party at one of our classmates house. We had a great time and took a group photos of our Class of 1989 - 1991.
Class was tough at that time. Some of the subject especially Additional Maths and Physic was really tough and the lecturer didn't make it easier for us either. I had to resit for the maths paper almost every year. It was stressfull. Some college mate who use to be best students in their school, cried at nite and almost became skizofrenia because of the pressure from their studies and trying to be at par with the other best students.
I wonder what happens to these classmate of mine. I did keep in touch with Mona but I can't say much for the others.
I received a visit from Anna and Lily (former classmate) during that year. We went out and had a great time that nite. I'm glad I went out with Anna before she leaves for US to continue with her degree. For the next few years I was not able to see her until she return to Malaysia. I did receive some photos and short letters from her though. We kept in touch (not so often) although we were both busy with our class schedule.
As I look back at my life, I know that I had two years of fun and an amazing life journey. My road to success was not easy but every step I took, I greatly depend on JESUS.

Teenagers Falling Inlove
Just like every normal girls out there, I started my teenage years admiring boys, lots of boys. I'm your average girl next door. Nothing special about me. When I started my Form 1 class I befriended girls from my village. That was the start of a really fantastic teenage life. I'm lucky to have Anna, Sla and Ros as a friend. We were inseparable that time. Anna was the smart one, Sla was the one with the looks and flirtatious attitude and Ros, she was the tough one...me, just someone who tags along. We had or they had strings of admirers and I love being the one who observe from far.
In Form 2, I had a crushed with one of my brother's friend. He noticed me because he couldn't resist any girls who has a crush on him even if it was cow wearing a wig!!. I wrote his name on my school desk and was confronted by the seniors because one of them has a crushed on him too. So we had a small war with notes flying around about this guy and after a while, I realised that he was just using me. It felt terrible at first but I got over it.
In Form 5, I fell in love with this guy from a rival school. He was about two years older and had mix parentage. He never notice me...until one day I couldn't have made it more obvious....I was so surprised to see him at the local F&B outlet that I spilled the coffee on Anna's school uniform and he saw the whole incident of me being clumsy. Worst part was we had an exam that afternoon and Anna smelled of coffee!!! She was given the odd look by the examiner...I got a break with this guy after the exam. He agree to go out with me and we had a great time. He was a funny person but I realised that we don't have the same vision at that time. Months later I got an offer to do a matriculation at a local university so off I went and that was the last time i heard from him. I did try to look for him when I came home during our semester break but I guess it was never meant to be...
After the SPM exam was over, we had a party arranged by a schoolmate. We had a great time and late as it was, we managed to go home safely. In the next few months Anna got a job at a stationary shop while me, I stayed at home because no one wants to hire me. But it didn't take long for us to know our SPM result's , so the next few months I was busy filling up UPU form. The fact that my sister and her family was away on the Malaysian Cruise didn't help. So I had to do everything on my own including dragging my mum to the old Yayasan Building next to RTM to take an oath as she didn't have a birth certificate. I even type the oath letter myself. I had to go to and fro between different department to get things done and I was only 17 then but as usual I grew up overnite. I believe that if you want something so badly, you just have to be smart and work hard on it and leave the rest to Jesus...
By June that year, Anna was leaving for KL for the A-level and I didn't get any reply from UPU. I was devastated because my next option was to apply for Form 6 in a neighbouring school. That option would be difficult because I didn't obtain credit for the bahasa malaysia subject. I knew who was the headmaster of the neighbouring school so I decided to give him a call. That was the most humiliating conversation i ever had with a person whom I look up to. I ask for his favour to help me enter Form 6 in his school and his reply was that with the SPM results I have, I will not be able to enter any school let alone any university! That was his exact words! So I politely told him it is okay if he doesn't want to assist me and said goodbye. That nite I cried myself to sleep and it felt like my whole world has crushed. But Jesus did not abandon me...exactly a week before the end of June that year, I received a reply from UPU - UITM offering me a Diploma in Civil Engineering. A few days later I received another UPU letter, this time from University Malaya offering me to do Science Matriculation. I was so happy and my sister advise me to take up the offer from UM. I only had a week to prepare my medical report as well as other documentation ready and by the end of the week I was flying alone to KL for the orientation week....

An alcoholic mother
My mother turn to booze after the death of my father. She drinks almost every nite. I was only about eigth or nine years old then. I was scare and worried that she would end up just like my father. When things aren't right and when she is drinking, my mom would end up quarelling with my sister. So I use to cry almost every nite not knowing what to do. When my mom is drunk and started crying she would just walk out of the house and start walking to the graveyard which was only about 1km from our house. I would follow her from behind trying to keep my distance and she would threathen and say things like "she is better off dead just like my father". It ripped my heart apart because I didn't want to be an orphan. I would cry in silence walking behind her and hoping that she would turn around and head back home. This happen so frequently that as young as I am at the age eight or nine, I have to learn to control the situation. Like I said I grew up overnite...i cried myself to sleep most nite wondering whether my mom would still be alive the next morning. Every morning I would listen to her heartbeat and hoping that it is still beating. I do just that almost every morning before I head for school. Every evening I would check the kitchen cabinet for liqours and throw away some without her knowing on the sink so that she does not consume so much. This happen for a very long time and as far as I remember she was still drinking even in my teenage years. I love my mom but what she put me thru all those years has made me resent her. When I look back, I have a choice whether to end up like her or be someone who makes a difference. I chose to make a difference...

The Death of My Father
My father was the whole world for me. He sent me to school everyday. I just started my first primary class and he was always there for me when the class finished by noon. It was after the first few weeks of sending me to school that he suffer a stomach pain and he was sent to the hospital by my sister. I was too young to understand then when he was diagnose with chronic stomach ulcer. I couldn't understand what the fuss was all about. My mom look after him in the hospital for the next four (4) months and it took a toll on my mom's health as well. She grew thinner and thinner but I guess knowing the fact that my father's illness is uncurable made her loose the purpose of living. My father died four (4) months later on 9th May 1978. He was 66 years old and me.... I was just seven (7) then. I guess you would say that my father was old but I believe he could have live longer if he had not been drinking. You see... my father even brewed his own liqour and share it with his friends evening time. Despite his drinking habit, he was never abusive, he just like to drink with his buddies. I was too young to advise him then but if I had a chance to turn back time, I would do exactly that...Advice him, he probably listen to his favorite girl. Now I'm in my forties and I still miss him. I still remember the time when my father and I use to sit by the main door and we like to look at the moon. I use to ask him who lives on the moon and he mention that, that someone is just like him looking after me from afar. Growing up without a father was never easy. I guess you could say that I grew up overnite. My mother is illiterate, so for her to be independent was rather difficult at the beginning. She got on by though but that is another story to tell.....

My Life Journey
This is a blog to describe my life journey . My life journey was never easy but I went through it knowing full well that if I face the problems I will be able to overcome whatever problem i have in the future. I don't believe in running away from the problems we have but faced it and you'll be a greater person. I'm also a great believer of Jesus Christ. Without HIM I would not be where I am today. In all that I do I know Jesus is there for me to guide me thru and I love HIM.
Someday I would built HIS church, well more like a Chapel in the rural areas to help the locals to have a proper place to worship HIM. I would like to have the full set of team...with the priest, the lay reader, the choir and the church helpers to be there for every chapel. My wish is to have everyone believe in Jesus Christ and that HE died for our sins on the cross.
I want to get rid of the booze because that is the start of destruction of every mankind especially in the rural areas. I believe that if there is a church or a chapel and with the priest guidance, the locals would turn from away from their sin and embrace Jesus as their Saviour. I know it is a long shot but with JESUS nothing is impossible!

The Hardship of the Locals at Ulu Skrang
This video is taken during the trip upstream to Ulu Skrang. When the river is shallow, the locals struggle (berbatak, bersuar) to shove the boat in order for the boat not to be stuck on the rocks. It needs incredible strength to do just that. If that was me, my whole body would be sore by the time we reach our destination.
Notice the boat infront...the one who is shoving the boat (the blue shirt) thru shallow water is a lady. Can you imagine how difficult it is for her to push the boat with all her strength. This are the typical scenario in the Skrang river during the dry season as the river is their means of transportation to and from their longhouse. There is a logging road but no maintenance done by the logger so if you don't have a 4x4 wheel drive experience, don't even attempt to use the road because it is dangerous as well as very slippery and you might end up as a statistic.
The government recently announced that the road along the Skrang river will be built and it is supposedly reach Panchor in Ulu Skrang. If materialize, that road will definitely ease the transportation issues especially during the dry season. So all YBs, minister, parliment representative take note on this matter as we want this road project to kick off soon for the benefit of the people of Ulu Skrang.
