Gambling unlawful even during funeral wakes — Police chief

KAPIT: Kapit police chief DSP Entusa Iman has advised members of the public here not to indulge in gambling activities as it is against the law.
“Gambling is not our ‘adat’. Don’t take advantage of funerals to organise gambling sessions. Gambling is unlawful,” he warned.
Acting on a public tip-off, a CID team last Saturday conducted a raid on an illegal cockfighting session at Merating, Sut along Baleh river about an hour’s drive away from here.
“The police managed to apprehend five men and recovered four dead and four live fighting cocks. The men are now under remand pending further investigation. The police will also call up a few more persons believed to be involved,” said Entusa.
He warned that only those with valid licences and gathering permits were allowed to conduct cockfighting, and reminded them that stiff penalties await those who breach the law.
“Without the licence and permit, it’s illegal to organise cockfighting. Persons involved can be charged under Section 5(3)(D) — Cruelty to Animals (cockfighting) rule.
“Any one found in procession of ‘taji’ or cockfighting knife could be charged under the explosives and offensive weapons act.
“If convicted, the sentence is a jail term or a fine of not more than RM5,000.
æIf in procession of ‘taji’, he could be charged under the Corrosive and Explosive Substance and Offensive Weapons Act,” he explained.
Entusa also took the opportunity to advise families not to allow any form of gambling activities to be carried out during their period of mourning.
“It’s rampant here in Kapit that the family of the deceased while preparing for the funeral allows gambling sessions in their premises.
“Warning is hereby given before hand and police will not hesitate to take action against any offender,” he warned

I truly agree on this matter. During a funeral, we are supposed to pay our respect to the dead person. So by gambling during a funeral you are not respecting the dead. Gambling of any sorts are a disgrace especially to the dead person's family. So I hope in the future, anyone see someone trying to start a gambling event during a funeral please stop them. It is a despicable act of disgrace to our community and to the dead person's family.
